The race is open to horses aged 4 years and over at the famous Royal Ascot meeting.
The Wolferton Stakes made its first appearance in 2002 in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and gets its name from the village of Wolferton.
Originally named the “Wolferton Rated Stakes” and subsequently “Wolferton Handicap” (2002-2017), the race rules prohibit Group 1 and Group 2 winners (since the previous August) from entering the Wolferton Stakes.
Ascot Course Layout
The first-ever winner of the Wolferton Stakes was Ulundi, trained by Paul Webber and ridden by Irish jockey Richard Hughes. The racing weight conditions are 9st 3lb.
The most successful trainer of winners in the Wolferton Stakes is John Gosden, who managed to get four winners through in the 2000s. Those were Beachfire (2011) and Gatewood (2012) which were both ridden by William Buick, then Mahsoob (2015, Paul Hanagan) and Monarchs Glen (2018, Frankie Dettori).
